Abstract

The chapter investigates the intricate flow structures in the wake of a surface-mounted finite-height square prism, highlighting the significant differences between two-dimensional and three-dimensional flow conditions. It reviews various flow models, including those proposed by Sakamoto and Arie, Wang and Zhou, and Bourgeois et al., each offering distinct interpretations of the near-wake behavior. The study focuses on the dynamic features of the wake, particularly the controversial aspects such as the shape of the structures, the source of streamwise vorticity, and the overall shedding mechanism. The authors employ large-eddy simulation (LES) to analyze the phase-averaged flow field, contributing to a deeper understanding of the complex fluid-obstacle interactions in engineering applications.
