Abstract

The chapter delves into the intricate world of dynamic legislative bargaining, focusing on models where policies are decided periodically and influenced by previous bargaining outcomes. It introduces a typology to distinguish between 'endogenous' and 'evolving' status-quo, and surveys key literature on bargaining over distributive and spatial policies. The survey highlights the complexities of equilibrium existence, the dynamics of policy outcomes, and the efficiency of these models. Notably, it discusses the rotating dictator equilibrium in distributive models and the strategic moderation in spatial models. The chapter concludes by identifying open questions and potential avenues for future research, making it a valuable resource for specialists in political economy and legislative studies.
This survey was prepared for the book “Bargaining: Current Research and Future Directions”, Emin Karagözoğlu and Kyle Hyndman (eds.), Palgrave Macmillan. We thank the editors for their invitation and an anonymous referee for insightful feedback on an earlier version. Due to space limitations, we do not discuss or even cite a number of related works.
