Abstract

The chapter focuses on the dynamic response of circular base slabs (CBS) attached to seismic bearing systems, a crucial aspect of base-isolation for earthquake-resistant buildings. It introduces the concept of seismic base isolation and the specific type of bearing system used, which comprises layers of synthetic/natural rubber sandwiched between metallic plates. The chapter delves into the modeling of these base slabs as circular plates resting on elastic foundations, specifically the Winkler-Pasternak foundation model. It discusses the use of Chebyshev polynomials for solving the governing differential equations and provides numerical results for various design parameters. The impact of foundation factors on the elastic response mode and dynamic loads is extensively studied, with design charts and salient features reported. The chapter concludes by highlighting the potential of appropriately designed seismic bearings to protect buildings from earthquake damage and offer high comfort levels to occupants.
