Excerpt

The article delves into the comparison of three primary e-motor types—induction machine, permanent magnet synchronous machine, and permanent magnet hybrid synchronous machine with reluctance torque—for secondary electric drives in electric vehicles. It highlights the importance of choosing the right e-motor for secondary drives due to the increasing focus on electric vehicles. The comparison focuses on key performance indicators such as cost, peak power, continuous power, efficiency, raw materials, drag losses, response times, package, and mass. The article emphasizes the significance of peak power and the need for stability for up to 30 seconds. It also discusses the impact of efficiency and drag losses in passive states. The analysis considers vehicle applications in C- to E-segment vehicles, including SUVs, requiring peak power of 90 to 150 kW. The study evaluates the characteristics of each e-motor type, their advantages, and disadvantages, and provides a comprehensive evaluation of their suitability for secondary drives. The article concludes with a summary of the strengths and weaknesses of each e-motor type and offers insights into future considerations for e-motor design in electric vehicles.
