Abstract

This chapter aims to bring out the significance of the domestic workforce, and the socio-economic issues encountered by domestic workers, particularly women. Based on these concrete objectives of the study, this chapter has been articulated such as introduction, research objectives, methodological framework, literature survey, analysis, discussion, findings of the work, conclusion, and future directions. This research work aims to examine the significance of women domestics and their workforce participation and evaluate the societal and economic issues faced by woman domestic workers in India. To achieve these objectives, secondary data has been collected from the National Sample Survey Organisation and analyzed. This study is based on descriptive and analytical research methods. Existing literature has been reviewed interpreted, compared, and analyzed in line with framed objectives. This study analyses the vital significance and the contributions of women domestic workers in India through selected secondary data sources from NSSO and examines the socio-economic issues of informal sector domestic workers by analysing the various related existing literature from published sources. The study concluded that domestic workers are highly concentrated and attracted by the cities for domestic employment. But they have been paid less than the minimum wage without any basic social security measure. Along with these socio-economic issues, they also face sexual abuse, exploitation, and discrimination.
