Abstract

This study delves into the effects of footing size on the seismic response and repair cost of a two-story concentrically braced frame (CBF) building in a Canadian context. The research compares three different footing sizes—US, Canadian not capacity-protected (NCP), and Canadian capacity-protected (CP)—and their impact on engineering demand parameters (EDPs) such as drift and acceleration. The findings reveal that larger footings reduce total drift but increase drift originating from braced frame deflection. Additionally, peak floor acceleration tends to rise with larger footings. The economic loss assessment highlights that nonstructural acceleration-sensitive components are the primary contributors to repair costs. Interestingly, the difference in repair costs between NCP and CP footings is negligible, suggesting that NCP footings might be a more cost-effective option for low-rise buildings with CBFs. This study provides valuable insights into the trade-offs between footing size, seismic performance, and economic losses, offering practical recommendations for improving building resilience against earthquakes.
