Abstract

This chapter delves into the economic sustainability of non-motorized transport (NMT) infrastructure, with a case study of Chennai, India. It explores the economic benefits of NMT, the challenges associated with its implementation, and strategies for promoting its adoption in urban environments. The study employs a structured survey and the Best–Worst Method (BWM) to evaluate sustainability indicators relevant to NMT infrastructure. Key findings include the identification of 'reduction in travel cost' as the most critical economic benefit of NMT, followed by 'travel time benefits'. The research also highlights the importance of considering economic benefits in the planning and execution of NMT projects. It emphasizes the need for a collaborative approach involving various stakeholders to overcome barriers and achieve sustainable urban mobility. The study concludes by recommending appropriate policies and strategies to improve NMT infrastructure in Indian cities, ensuring economic, social, and environmental sustainability.
