Abstract

This chapter delves into the historical and contemporary significance of common goods, emphasizing the challenges in managing them effectively. It begins with a practical example of mushroom picking regulations, illustrating the importance of detailed rules for sustainable resource use. The text then explores the economic theories of common goods, tracing their evolution from Katharine Coman’s pioneering work to Elinor Ostrom’s Nobel Prize-winning research. It highlights the differences between public goods and common goods, with a particular focus on the ‘tragedy of the commons’ as described by Garrett Hardin. The chapter also discusses the application of game theory to understand and address the challenges of common goods management, offering insights into potential solutions such as intrinsic rewards and ‘we-rationality’. Additionally, it emphasizes the role of civil society in managing common goods, advocating for a new pact that balances individual freedom and common goods. The chapter concludes with a call to recognize mutual vulnerability and cultivate a culture of cooperation to effectively manage common goods and ensure the future of our species.
In Nonantola, near Modena, there is still an association among the Uomini del comune—note the antiquated word uomini (men) for inhabitants—for the cultivation of extensive farms belonging to the community: another well-preserved fragment of ancient collective property. (Achille Loria 1909)
