Abstract

This chapter explores the use of EEG signals for recognizing left and right hand motor imagery, focusing on the potential of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) to enhance independence for individuals with disabilities. The text delves into the intricacies of EEG signal processing, highlighting the non-stationary nature of these signals and the challenges posed by subject variability. It discusses various feature extraction methods, including wavelet transform and Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC), and their role in improving classification accuracy. The chapter also presents a comprehensive evaluation of classification algorithms, with a particular emphasis on the use of Support Vector Machines (SVM) and genetic algorithms for feature selection. The results demonstrate significant improvements in classification accuracy, underscoring the importance of subject-specific optimization in BCI performance. The chapter concludes with a comparison of the proposed method with previous works, highlighting its superior performance and the need for further research in this field.
