Abstract

The study investigates the impact of gadolinium (Gd) on the inclusions and microstructure of Al-killed high sulfur steel used in engine connecting rods. The addition of Gd modifies MnS inclusions, transforming them from irregular shapes to spherical and dispersed forms, which significantly enhances the steel's machinability and material properties. The research also examines the effect of Gd on austenite grain size, pearlite lamellae spacing, and the precipitation of MnS inclusions during solidification. Thermodynamic calculations further validate the observed modifications, providing a holistic understanding of the steel's behavior with Gd addition. The results highlight the potential of Gd in improving the overall performance of high sulfur steel, making it a valuable resource for materials scientists and metallurgical engineers.
