Abstract

The article explores the impact of gadolinium (Gd) on the deformation of sulfides and mechanical properties of Al-killed resulfurized steel. Through a series of experiments, the study investigates how Gd modifies sulfide inclusions, such as MnS, and influences the steel's microstructure and performance. The addition of Gd is found to enhance the deformation resistance of sulfide inclusions, transforming elongated MnS into spherical Gd sulfides. This modification significantly improves the steel's hardness and austenite grain size, while slightly reducing its ductility. The study highlights the potential of Gd as a microalloying element to optimize the mechanical properties of free-cutting steel, providing valuable insights for further research and industrial applications.
