Abstract

The study investigates the impact of hemicellulose molecular structure on wettability and surface adhesion to urea–formaldehyde resin adhesives. It focuses on two types of hemicellulose, arabinogalactan and xylan, extracted from softwood and hardwood, respectively. The research employs advanced characterization methods such as ATR-FTIR, XRD, NMR, AFM, and XPS to elucidate the chemical structures and determine the surface roughness of the hemicellulose samples. The adhesion force and work of adhesion between hemicellulose films and UF resin droplets are measured, revealing distinct interactions based on the molecular structure of hemicellulose. The findings provide valuable insights into optimizing adhesion processes in wood-based products by understanding the role of hemicellulose in adhesion.
