Abstract

The chapter investigates the impact of host surface factors on the biocompatible adhesion index of dental implants, focusing on the competition between cellular and bacterial adhesion during implantation. It models the initial adhesion of early colonizing bacteria, primarily oral Streptococcus, and the response of immature osteoblast cells to various surface morphologies. The study uses laser spallation to quantify the adhesion strength of biological films on smooth and roughened titanium surfaces, with and without blood plasma coating. The results demonstrate that plasma coating significantly reduces the adhesion strength of bacterial biofilms, suggesting a potential improvement in the existing Adhesion Index metric. Future research aims to further model in vivo conditions and expand the application of this metric to other implantable devices.
