Abstract

The rapid increase in cement utilization and the consequent environmental impacts have sparked interest in alternative materials and self-healing concrete technologies. This chapter investigates the effects of metakaolin and fly ash aggregates on the self-healing properties of concrete, focusing on both autogenous and autonomous healing mechanisms. The study employs Bacillus subtilis to induce microbial-induced calcium precipitation, a promising technique for enhancing concrete durability. Key findings reveal that a 15% replacement of cement with metakaolin optimizes strength properties in both conventional and fly ash aggregate-based concretes. Fly ash aggregates, with their porous structure, improve self-healing by retaining bacteria, while metakaolin enhances this property through its pozzolanic action.
