Abstract

The rapid increase in cement utilization and the consequent environmental impacts have sparked interest in alternative materials and self-healing concrete technologies. This chapter investigates the effects of metakaolin and fly ash aggregates on the self-healing properties of concrete, focusing on both autogenous and autonomous healing mechanisms. The study employs Bacillus subtilis to induce microbial-induced calcium precipitation, a promising technique for enhancing concrete durability. Key findings reveal that a 15% replacement of cement with metakaolin optimizes strength properties in both conventional and fly ash aggregate-based concretes. Fly ash aggregates, with their porous structure, improve self-healing by retaining bacteria, while metakaolin enhances this property through its pozzolanic action. The chapter also presents detailed microstructural analyses, demonstrating the formation of dense calcite precipitates that contribute to strength recovery and crack mitigation. These insights highlight the potential of metakaolin and fly ash aggregates in developing high-performance, sustainable concrete materials.
