Abstract

This chapter delves into the significant impact of pedestrian crossings on traffic flow parameters in urban areas, with a particular focus on developing countries like India. The study investigates how unprotected mid-block crossings influence vehicle speeds, capacity, and level of service, utilizing macroscopic models such as Greenshields, Greenberg, Underwood, and Northwestern. Key findings reveal that pedestrian crossings can lead to substantial reductions in vehicle speeds and traffic capacity, with the Greenshields model proving most accurate in depicting the relationship between traffic density and speed. The analysis highlights that capacity reduction is most pronounced at locations with high pedestrian activity and bus stops. The study also establishes a relationship between pedestrian cross-flow and capacity reduction, recommending infrastructure enhancements and traffic control measures to mitigate these effects. Additionally, the research identifies the degradation of the level of service at various traffic volumes, emphasizing the need for improved pedestrian crossing facilities and traffic calming measures. Overall, the chapter provides valuable insights into improving traffic efficiency and pedestrian safety in urban environments.
