Abstract

The chapter investigates the significant yet under-researched impact of pedestrians on vehicular speed and road capacity, with a particular focus on hilly roads. It highlights the unique challenges posed by gradients and pedestrian movements in these terrains, which are often overlooked in traditional traffic flow studies. The research presents a detailed analysis of how pedestrians influence traffic dynamics, including their direct and indirect effects on vehicular speed and road capacity. By comparing road segments with and without pedestrian crossings, the study reveals the substantial reductions in speed and capacity caused by pedestrian presence, especially in areas with steep gradients. The findings underscore the importance of considering pedestrian factors in traffic management strategies, particularly in hilly regions. The chapter also discusses the implications of these findings for urban planning, infrastructure design, and traffic management, offering practical recommendations for enhancing safety and efficiency on hilly roads. Through a comprehensive literature review and rigorous methodology, the study provides valuable insights into the complex interplay between pedestrians, gradients, and vehicular traffic, making it an essential read for anyone interested in optimizing traffic flow in challenging geographical settings.
