Abstract

This chapter delves into the thermal performance of borehole heat exchangers (BHEs) enhanced with shape-stabilized phase change backfill material (SSPCBM) in layered geological structures. The study focuses on the significant improvements in heat transfer and system efficiency achieved through the use of SSPCBM. A 3D numerical model was established to simulate the thermal behavior of BHEs under various soil conditions, highlighting the impact of SSPCBM on borehole thermal resistance and heat flux distribution. The research also investigates the phase change process of SSPCBM in different soil layers, revealing notable variations in phase change completion times and heat transfer characteristics. The findings demonstrate that SSPCBM can significantly enhance the thermal performance of BHEs, with the most substantial improvements observed in layers with favorable thermal properties. The study concludes that the strategic placement of SSPCBM and the surrounding soil's thermal properties play crucial roles in optimizing BHE performance, offering valuable insights for the design and implementation of geothermal systems.
