Abstract

Concrete shrinkage, an inevitable phenomenon, can lead to significant cracking and structural degradation if not properly managed. This chapter explores the intricate interplay between concrete shrinkage and the underlying soil, focusing on foundation slabs. It reveals how the commonly used Winkler model may underestimate shrinkage stresses, potentially leading to unforeseen structural issues. The analysis employs two numerical models to investigate the effects of different soil stiffnesses and friction coefficients on stress distribution. The first model considers a foundation slab on a Winkler elastic base, while the second model introduces a substructure with varying friction coefficients. The results underscore the importance of accurate modeling in predicting shrinkage stresses, offering valuable insights for enhancing the durability and safety of concrete structures. The chapter also discusses the implications of these findings for future research and practical applications, emphasizing the need for more precise modeling techniques in structural engineering.
