Effect of ternary PEDOT/ZnO/Flyash-cenosphere photocatalyst on photo-degradation of methyl orange under visible light

Abstract

A novel ternary nano composite of poly (3-4 ethylenedioxide thiophene)/zinc oxide/Flyash cenosphere (PEDOT/ZnO/FAC) was synthesised. The prepared ternary nano composites were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Powder X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and photocatalytic degradation. FTIR depicted the functional group stretching and confirmed the formation of the composites. XRD result showed the characteristic peak of PEDOT and FAC at 2θ ~26.03 and 26.24 respectively. TEM indicated that synthesized ZnO nanorods and PEDOT have a size of 9.19 and 156.9 nm respectively. SEM confirmed the morphology of ZnO nanoparticles and the composites. The composites were applied to study the photo-degradation of methyl orange involving azo group (N=N). Photo-catalytic degradation showed that 2 % PEDOT/ZnO/FAC composites have the highest degradation of dye under visible light with first order rate constant (k) value of 0.0058 min−1.
