Abstract

This chapter examines the intricate behavior of explosions in urban environments, focusing on how building topography influences structural blast load profiles. Through a detailed case study of the 2020 Nashville explosion, the study employs advanced computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to model blast wave interactions within a densely packed commercial district. The investigation reveals the complex patterns of blast wave propagation, including regular and irregular reflections, and their impact on surrounding structures. A parametric study further explores the effects of varying charge positions and street widths on blast overpressure profiles, highlighting the significance of urban confinement on blast dynamics. The findings underscore the importance of considering urban topography in the design of protective structures and the development of effective blast mitigation strategies. The study concludes that understanding these complex dynamics is crucial for enhancing city resilience and public safety in the face of potential urban blast events.
