Abstract

The study investigates the impact of steam explosion on the cellulose cell walls, gas permeability, and sound absorption capability of Cocos nucifera (palmwood). By subjecting palmwood samples to a low-pressure steam explosion, researchers observed significant improvements in air permeability and sound absorption coefficient (SAC). The steam explosion process enhanced the gas permeability by removing obstacles in the cell wall, leading to a 259.3% increase in air permeability. Additionally, the SAC of the steam-exploded palmwood increased by 52.33% over a wide frequency range, making it a promising material for sound-absorbing applications. The findings were corroborated through detailed characterization techniques, including FESEM, ATR-FTIR, and XRD, which revealed substantial changes in the cellulose crystallinity and chemical composition of the treated samples. These results highlight the potential of steam explosion as a simple and effective method for enhancing the acoustic properties of palmwood, with implications for various industrial applications.
