Abstract

This chapter explores the critical task of effectively communicating smoke visibility data to ensure fire safety in complex buildings, particularly train stations. It delves into the use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations to model the flow of heat, smoke, and toxic gases during fire incidents. The text highlights the challenges of interpreting visibility impairment from smoke visibility data alone, especially in non-uniform environments with communicating levels and varying ceiling heights. A novel methodology is presented to compute the depth of a field of view (FOV) along any sightline, using an iterative method to determine the furthest visible point in a given direction. The application of this method is demonstrated through a case study of a train station fire incident, where smoke visibility data is analyzed to assess evacuation safety. The results show that overlaying sightlines on smoke visibility data provides a clear and consistent measure of tenability, enabling project management teams to make reliable interpretations and decisions. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the importance of efficient communication of smoke visibility data to ensure safe and timely evacuations in fire emergencies.
