Abstract

The study investigates the effects of aluminization on the wear behavior of Incoloy 800HT and Inconel 617 alloys, which are candidate materials for high-temperature gas-cooled reactors (HTGRs). The alloys were subjected to high-temperature exposure in impure helium environments and subsequent tribological testing. Aluminization significantly improved the wear resistance of Incoloy 800HT due to the formation of hard intermetallic phases. For Inconel 617, aluminization did not show significant improvement, and wear behavior resembled ceramic wear. The study highlights the importance of surface treatments in enhancing the performance of structural materials under extreme conditions, offering valuable insights for the development of next-generation nuclear reactors.
