Abstract

This chapter delves into the significant impacts of biomass ash and biochar on soil properties, highlighting their roles as soil additives in modern agriculture. Biomass ash, derived from combustion, acts as a lime and mineral fertilizer substitute, reducing soil acidity and enriching it with essential nutrients. Biochar, produced through pyrolysis, is a porous, carbon-rich material that enhances soil fertility, captures contaminants, and promotes plant growth. Both additives improve soil structure, increasing porosity and reducing bulk density, which facilitates root growth and improves soil aeration. They also enhance water retention and infiltration, making soils more resilient to drought and heavy rainfall. The chapter further explores how these additives influence soil pH, nutrient cycles, and microbial activity, ultimately contributing to sustainable soil management and climate change mitigation. The text concludes that both biomass ash and biochar are valuable tools for improving soil health and agricultural productivity, with biochar offering additional benefits through long-term carbon sequestration.
