Abstract

This study delves into the effects of climate, traffic, and bridge configuration on the risk of brittle fracture in highway bridges, challenging the current one-size-fits-all approach of CSA S6. The research employs the Eurocode fracture mechanics method to perform a reliability analysis, treating input parameters probabilistically. It investigates the impact of different climates, traffic volumes, bridge spans, and multiple vehicle crossings on the probability of failure. The results indicate that simultaneous truck crossings significantly influence design requirements, while other factors like ADTT, bridge span, and location have a negligible effect. The study finds that current design provisions may be conservative for mild steels but insufficient for high-strength steels, suggesting a need for improved consistency in reliability levels across all steel grades. This research provides valuable insights for optimizing design requirements and improving the safety and cost-effectiveness of steel bridges.
