Abstract

This study investigates the effects of cold storage and botanical extracts on the viability of two key biocontrol agents, Aphidius colemani and Orius laevigatus. The research is divided into two phases: the first phase examines the impact of cold storage at 4°C for various durations on the hatching success of both parasitoid and predator eggs. The second phase evaluates the side effects of several plant-derived substances, including willow (Salix spp.), laurel (Laurus spp.), chamomile (Matricaria spp.), and Bacillus thuringiensis, on aphid mummies parasitized by A. colemani and on O. laevigatus eggs. The study finds that prolonged cold storage significantly reduces the emergence rates of both species, with notable declines observed after 72 hours. The side effect studies reveal that while botanical extracts exert some toxicity, they are generally classified as harmless according to IOBC standards. The findings suggest that short-term cold storage and the use of compatible botanical insecticides can be integrated into integrated pest management (IPM) programs to enhance the effectiveness of biological control strategies. This research provides valuable insights for professionals seeking to optimize the use of natural enemies in pest management, offering practical recommendations for improving the viability and efficacy of biocontrol agents in agricultural and horticultural settings.
