Abstract

The article investigates the impact of current density (CD) and temperature on the properties of sludge in an electro-bioreactor, aiming to enhance sludge characteristics and mitigate membrane fouling in wastewater treatment systems. Experiments were conducted using batch electro-bioreactors at various temperatures and CD levels, revealing significant improvements in sludge filterability and settleability. The application of CD fields resulted in larger floc sizes, reduced zeta potential, and enhanced settling properties, which are crucial for minimizing membrane fouling. Additionally, the study found that the release of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and soluble microbial products (SMP) was reduced, further contributing to fouling mitigation. The findings suggest that electrokinetic techniques can be an effective solution for improving wastewater treatment efficiency in low-temperature environments.
