Abstract

Im Jahr 1990 erschien unter dem Titel „The Machine That Changed the World“ eine Zusammenfassung der Ergebnisse eines mehrjährigen Produktivitätsvergleichs der internationalen Automobilindustrie. Diese umfassende Studie des Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), die im Rahmen des International Motor Vehicle Program (IMVP) durchgeführt wurde, attestiert den japanischen Automobilherstellern eine deutlich höhere Produktivität, Qualität und Flexibilität ihrer Fabriken im Vergleich zu denen amerikanischer und europäischer Automobilhersteller. Zurückgeführt wird dieser Erfolg auf das Konzept der Lean Production, das seitdem intensiv diskutiert wird.
