Abstract

The article 'Elected Officials, Empowered Voters: The Impact of Descriptive Representation on Voter Turnout' delves into the relationship between the presence of African American elected officials and increased voter turnout among African Americans. It highlights the transformative effect of descriptive representation, particularly in South Carolina, where the Voting Rights Act led to a surge in Black elected officials. The study employs a richer measure of descriptive representation, capturing the number and jurisdictional levels of Black elected officials, to demonstrate a strong and consistent link to higher African American voter turnout. The research also considers the impact of different levels of political office and the cumulative effect of multiple Black representatives, offering a more nuanced understanding of the empowering effects of descriptive representation. The findings challenge previous mixed results by accounting for the varied contexts and historical empowerment of communities, making this a significant contribution to the field of political science and sociology.
