Abstract

The article 'Electoral Role Models: Political Empowerment and Candidate Emergence' delves into the influence of descriptive representation on political participation and candidate emergence, focusing on women and racial minorities. It highlights that despite theoretical expectations, the election of women or Afro-Brazilian mayors does not significantly increase the number of women or Afro-Brazilians running for local office in subsequent elections. Using comprehensive electoral data and regression discontinuity designs, the study finds no causal effect of role models on candidate emergence, suggesting that other factors, such as resource considerations, may be more influential. The research underscores the need for further investigation into the barriers and motivations behind political candidacy, particularly in the context of Brazil's diverse population and political landscape.
