Volkswagen to Launch ID.3 Electric Car as a Special Edition

Patrick Schäfer

Volkswagen has announced the name of its new, all-electric car. The VW ID.3 will premiere at IAA 2019 and is planned for market launch in 2020.

Volkswagen is revealing more details about its compact electric vehicle, the ID.3. The number 3 identifies the compact segment in the Group's internal nomenclature. The electric car will be launched as a 1st Edition model limited to 30,000 vehicles, for which Volkswagen is already accepting pre-orders. Costing less than 40,000 euros, this model is said to achieve a WLTP range of 420 kilometres with its 58 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery.

The VW ID.3 will be available with three different battery sizes and will achieve WLTP ranges from 330 to 550 kilometres. Rapid charging for 30 minutes should allow the model with the smallest battery to drive for at least 260 kilometres. The entry-level price for the smallest ID.3 series model should be below 30,000 euros. Volkswagen considers the ID.3 to be the "electric car of a new generation, one that will help us to make e-mobility both suitable for daily use and affordable," says Jürgen Stackmann, Board Member for Sales at Volkswagen.
