Volvo subsidiary Polestar has unveiled the Polestar 3 battery-electric performance SUV. At launch, the SUV is equipped with a powerful dual-motor drive and a 111 kWh battery.

The Polestar 3 "electric performance SUV" is based on a new all-electric platform developed and shared by Volvo Cars. The SUV is 4.90 m long, 2.12 m wide with mirrors and 1.61 m high. The front features split headlights and daytime running lights in a Thor’s Hammer design. The so-called “smart zone” under the front aero wing integrates the sensor technology for the driver assistance systems. The window line rises sharply just before the C-pillar. The wide rear end with the continuous light strip is already familiar.
At launch, all variants of the Polestar 3 feature a twin-motor powertrain with rear-wheel drive and electric torque vectoring via a dual-clutch system on the rear electric motor. Power output is 360 kW (489 PS), while maximum torque is 840 Nm of torque. The optional Performance Package boosts maximum output to 380 kW (517 PS) and maximum torque to 910 Nm. The adaptive suspension with double wishbones at the front and integral control arms at the rear offers dual-chamber air suspension.
Polestar 3 with over 600 km range
The 111 kWh lithium-ion battery consists of prismatic cells, and the range is said to be up to 610 km according to WLTP. To increase efficiency, the rear motor can be decoupled from the drive. A heat pump is standard. The Polestar 3 is also equipped for bidirectional charging.
In the interior, attention was paid to the use of sustainable materials, such as "bio-attributed" MicroTech or animal welfare-certified leather. The infotainment system is based on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Cockpit platform and is OTA-updateable. The Android Automotive OS operating system was developed together with Google and is operated via a 14.5" display. Two closed-loop cameras with eye-tracking monitor the driver. The trunk holds between 484 and 1,411 l of volume.
The ADAS systems were created in collaboration with Zenseact, Luminar and Smart Eye. Data from five radar modules, five cameras and twelve ultrasonic sensors are processed by the Nvidia Drive Core computer with software from Volvo Cars. The optional Pilot Package with Lidar from Luminar, which can be ordered from mid-2023, includes an additional control unit from Nvidia, three cameras, four ultrasonic sensors and a cleaning function for the front and rear cameras. Production of the Polestar 3 is scheduled to begin in mid-2023 at Volvo Cars’ plant in Chengdu (China). Production is scheduled to start at Volvo’s U.S. plant in Ridgeville, South Carolina (USA), in mid-2024.
