Chinese start-up Byton has presented its second electric vehicle at CES Asia in Shanghai. The Byton K-Byte is also in the prototype phase.

The K-Byte electric saloon is 4.95 meters long, 1.95 meters wide and 1.50 meters high and was developed on the same platform as the already unveiled SUV. A clear design language with light strips and proudly presented lidar sensors aims to highlight the new features of this automated electric car: "The chrome grilles, rubber spoilers and twin tailpipes I found great as a young boy have long since been supplanted by other vehicle attributes – such as sensors, cameras and high resolution displays", says head designer Benoit Jacob.

Thanks to a three-metre wheelbase, the interior is generously dimensioned. As in the Byton SUV, the “Shared Experience Display” spanning across the cockpit is used in the new K-Byte. The saloon is still in an early concept stage and is mainly intended to provide a preview of the design. The Byton nomenclature was presented along with the vehicle. According to marketing head Henrik Wenders, Byton stands for "bytes on wheels" and is intended to emphasise the digital brand essence. The already revealed electric SUV will now be called the M-Byte. It should come onto the market at the end of 2019; the saloon is planned for 2021. Engineering services provider Edag will assist in developing the lightweight body. The first autonomously driving vehicle prototypes are expected to be tested at Level 4 beginning in 2020.
