BMW has unveiled its serial model of the iX3 electric SUV featuring fifth-generation eDrive technology with an electric synchronous motor. It will be produced in China.

The BMW X3 is now available as a purely electric model, as well as with petrol and diesel engines and as a plug-in hybrid drive. The exterior of the BMW iX3 stands out from the other models due to its almost closed kidney radiator grille, newly developed aerodynamic light alloy wheels and blue highlights. Thanks to the high-voltage battery fitted far down in the underbody, the interior offers space for up to five people. BMW Live Cockpit Professional with the BMW Maps cloud-based navigation system and BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant are fitted on board as standard.

The BMW iX3 features the latest fifth-generation eDrive technology, which will also be used in the iNext and i4 models from 2021. For the first time, BMW has integrated the electric motor, gearbox and power electronics into one housing. The electric motor works similarly to an electric synchronous motor without using magnets or rare earth elements. It has a maximum power of 210 kW (286 HP) and a maximum torque of 400 N m. Power is transmitted to the rear wheels. The iX3 can reach 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds and has a limited top speed of 180 km/h.

BMW iX3 has up to 150 kW charging capacity

In order to increase the recuperation phases, one-pedal driving can be used in driving position B. The enhanced heat pump is also designed to create a more efficient drive. However, the BMW iX3 also boasts features for improving driving dynamics, such as the ARB traction system (actuator contiguous wheel slip limitation) from the i3 and a low centre of gravity. An adaptive suspension with electrically controlled shock absorbers is fitted as standard.

The 400 V battery comprises 188 prismatic cells and has an energy content of 80 kWh, of which 74 kWh can be used. Based on the WLTP, the iX3 has a range of up to 460 km. Single- and three-phase charging is possible with a power rating of up to 11 kW. The vehicle has a charging capacity of up to 150 kW at a DC fast charging station, which charges an empty battery to 80% power in 34 minutes. Users who have a BMW Charging Card can access 450,000 public charging stations. BMW is also offering many new digital services such as navigation planning that includes recommendations for charging stops.

The BMW iX3 will be produced for worldwide export at the Chinese manufacturing site Shenyang, the headquarters of the joint venture BMW Brilliance Automotive. The first market launch will take place later this year in China.
