The Rinspeed Snap is a flexible, autonomous shuttle. The cabin can be separated from its platform and used for other purposes as required. The concept car will be unveiled at the CES in Las Vegas.

Frank M. Rinderknecht calls the driving platform the “skateboard” and it carries the complete technology and mechanics of the vehicle. The passenger compartment with four seats, called “pod”, can be separated from the skateboard and be useful while stationary, for example while camping. Another advantage is that the platform, which is prone to aging, can be easily replaced as required, while the pod can be used for a longer time, saving costs and preserving the environment.

The electric powertrain from ZF is integrated into both steering axles and allows the Snap to turn practically on the spot. Harman’s “Autonomous Drive Platform” is integrated into the skateboard. TomTom provides HD maps for autonomous driving, while Ibeo supplies the Lidar system. The autonomous vehicle communicates with other road users via two large exterior displays. Four laser projections on the side windows are used to communicate with boarding passengers. A high-voltage quick-charging cable recharges the Rinspeed.

The Rinspeed Snap has a customised interior

In the interior, everything is designed to suit the personal preferences of the passengers: once the vehicle has been opened via Smart Access, the displays are customised accordingly, and personal cloud content is made available after identification by face recognition. An intelligent, voice-controlled assistant has been designed to react to the preferences and habits of the occupants. Furthermore, each passenger has three displays at their disposal for interaction. Smart Antenna from NXP and Harman provides wireless networking with 5G, Car-to-X, radio reception, Bluetooth and WiFi. Interior LED lighting that emits ultraviolet light should render bacteria harmless and thereby improve hygiene in the shuttle.
