Abstract

Even the motor vehicle patented by Carl Benz in 1886 already included an electrical component: the battery with make-and-break ignition. The radio could be considered one of the first complex electrical systems, which was installed in US vehicles around 1940. The first true electronic systems with complex semiconductor circuits were implemented in engine controllers in the 1960s.

The battery electric truck as well as a fuel cell truck have a high voltage battery that supplies electric energy for the drive. Still a low voltage 24 V battery is foreseen for the electrical control system of the truck (see [4]).

For readers who are not well-versed in electrical terms: If a current of one amp (1 A) flows for an hour (1 h), this means that a charge of one amp-hour (1 Ah) is being drawn from the battery.
If 2 A flow for 3 h, this means that 6 Ah have been drawn. Current in [Amperes] is defined as charge per unit time. Thus, current times time equals charge.

In practice, the developers must deal with some limitations due to the fact that resources for a given functionality and physical connectors (pins) must be provided in the ECU, and while some units have them, others do not. Signal runtimes and response times also tend to vary when software components are transferred from one control unit to another.

The term fault or fault code has become accepted over a period of decades, since the primary purpose of fault codes is to provide assistance for cause analysis and troubleshooting in the event of a malfunction. The fault code does not necessarily describe that something is broken. It might refer to abnormalities and events that provide assistance when analyzing the vehicle’s behavior. A fault code “AdBlue tank empty” is helpful for analyzing the vehicle’s behavior but does not mean that the vehicle needs repair.
