Electric or electrified powertrains are widely seen as a valuable contribution to reduce the overall CO2 emissions, especially for the inner-city and private transport sector. But when it comes to long-distance freight transportation and heavy mobile machinery, the energy density of the in-vehicle stored fuel becomes mission critical. Therefore, internal combustion engines running with liquid fuels are seen to stay the main propulsion systems for these kinds of applications. In cooperation with FEV, RWTH Aachen University has investigated various alternative fuels for their suitability in mobile machines. …
