Abstract

The article presents a detailed investigation into the embrittlement factors affecting the fracture of electric-resistance welded (ERW) joints in low-carbon low-alloy steel pipes, as assessed through Charpy impact tests. The study reveals that the weld line (WL) zone exhibits the lowest impact toughness, with intermediate values in the heat-and-mechanically affected zone (HMAZ) and the highest values in the base metal (BM). The research identifies several key factors contributing to embrittlement, including the formation of a depleted carbon area, the presence of martensite-austenite (MA) constituents, and the development of an unfavorable crystallographic texture. The article also explores the role of nonmetallic inclusions (NMI) and their transformation during the welding process, which can act as significant stress concentrators. The findings highlight the complex interplay between microstructure, texture, and NMI in determining the impact toughness and brittle-fracture resistance of ERW joints. The study provides valuable insights into the mechanisms of embrittlement and offers a comparative analysis of the factors influencing the cold resistance of welded joints and base metal in steel pipes.
