The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association has warned that if the second largest car market in the EU, the British market, soon no longer counts as being part of the EU, CO2 targets may not be reached by 2021.

The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) are demanding that various framework conditions be clarified urgently in case of the UK’s probable exit from the EU. CO2 targets for new vehicles are currently calculated by tracking registration data from all EU countries, including the United Kingdom. If the UK leaves the EU, it will no longer be subject to European CO2 targets.

In theory, the requirement to include UK data in the fleet CO2 calculations will then also expire. ACEA General-Secretary Erik Jonnaert advocates keeping the system the same even if Brexit occurs: "Excluding UK data from the CO2 calculations would leave very limited time for the industry to readjust compliance strategies for reaching the stringent 2021 targets."
