Abstract

This chapter explores the integration of Indigenous roof designs with modern residential buildings to enhance energy efficiency, particularly in cold climates. It examines how traditional roof designs, such as those of igloos, tipis, and longhouses, can inspire the optimization of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems in contemporary homes. The study uses Autodesk Revit and Autodesk Insight to create and analyze various roof models, comparing their performance in terms of solar insolation and energy output. The research concludes that Indigenous-inspired roof designs can significantly improve the efficiency of solar panels, leading to better energy generation and reduced environmental impact. Additionally, the chapter discusses the BC Energy Step Code and its role in promoting Net Zero Energy Buildings (NZEBs) in Canada. It also highlights the potential cost savings and environmental benefits of adopting these designs. The study provides a framework for integrating traditional knowledge with modern technology, offering practical recommendations for architects and builders aiming to create more sustainable and energy-efficient homes.
