Empowering Rural Communities for Sustainable Waste Management: A Community-Driven Approach

This chapter delves into the critical issue of waste management in rural India, particularly in Krishnappa Nagara village. It examines the current challenges, including open dumping, burning of waste, and soil and water contamination, which pose significant threats to environmental and human health. The study employs a Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) methodology to engage the community in identifying and addressing these issues. Key findings include the lack of a reliable waste collection system and low community awareness of sustainable practices. The proposed solution is the establishment of a Community Waste Disposal Unit (CWDU), which automates waste segregation, composting, and compaction. This unit aims to reduce improper waste disposal, improve public health, and foster a sense of ownership and responsibility within the community. The chapter also discusses the expected benefits, potential challenges, and the importance of community engagement and education in ensuring the success of the CWDU. The estimated cost of implementing the CWDU is outlined, emphasizing the need for sustained support and funding. Overall, this chapter presents a comprehensive framework for sustainable waste management in rural areas, highlighting the potential for similar initiatives to be adopted in other communities facing similar challenges.
