Abstract

Zwischen der Lippe im Norden und der Ruhr im Süden ist die Emscher der dritte Fluss, der das Ruhrgebiet von Ost nach West zum Rhein durchströmt. Ein Fluss wie Lippe und Ruhr ist die Emscher aber schon lange nicht mehr, denn seit dem Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts wurde sie begradigt und in einen befestigten, offenen Kanal für häusliche, gewerbliche und bergbauliche Abwässer umgewandelt.
