Abstract

This chapter presents a novel self-sustaining wireless sensor node designed for predictive maintenance of electric motors, a critical component in various industries. The sensor node integrates a ThermoElectric Generator (TEG) for energy harvesting, ensuring a virtually infinite lifetime. It features a heterogeneous set of low-power Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) sensors, including accelerometers, Hall effect sensors, a microphone, and a temperature sensor. The device supports long-range connectivity through NB-IoT or WiFi, with a backup non-rechargeable battery for robust operation. Real-world measurements and in-field assessments demonstrate the device's capability to sustain a complete acquisition every 72 seconds on an electric motor operating at nominal power. The chapter also discusses the power consumption in different operational modes and the efficiency of the TEG, providing a comprehensive overview of the sensor node's design and performance.
