Abstract

The chapter delves into the waning importance of user-generated content (UGC) in news media strategies, despite the initial promise of social media platforms. It examines the shifting attitudes of media managers towards UGC, focusing on the strategic types of user participation: deliberation, donation, data gathering, and distribution. The study, conducted in Norway, reveals an increasing emphasis on distribution and data gathering strategies, while deliberation and donation strategies have seen a decline. The research also underscores the significant role of media group ownership and newspaper size in shaping these strategies. By exploring the challenges and opportunities faced by media managers in integrating social media into their practices, the chapter offers valuable insights into the complex dynamics of digital journalism.
