Abstract

The article delves into the transition of energy consumers to prosumers, focusing on households in Nigeria's North Central region. It defines energy consumers and prosumers, highlighting the role of affordable renewable energy technologies in facilitating this transition. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative interviews and quantitative surveys, to identify the motivations and barriers influencing households' adoption of prosumption practices. The Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) is used to understand the psychological determinants of prosumption behaviors. The research reveals that while economic incentives are significant, environmental concerns and energy independence also play crucial roles. Financial constraints and low technological awareness are identified as major barriers. The study concludes by offering policy implications and recommendations to promote energy prosumption in Nigeria, emphasizing the importance of public awareness, financial incentives, and simplified regulatory frameworks.
