Abstract

The chapter delves into the innovative use of piezoelectric transducer rings integrated into roller bearings to harvest energy and detect defects. The study introduces a compact smart bearing design that leverages dynamic strain during bearing operation, even in low-vibration environments. This design features a segmented electrode arrangement, allowing for simultaneous energy generation and health monitoring. The experimental setup and results demonstrate the system's capability to charge storage capacitors and detect bearing defects using machine learning techniques. The chapter explores the effects of electrode area, rotating speed, and capacitance on energy generation performance, as well as the effectiveness of defect detection under various operating conditions. The findings highlight the potential of this smart bearing system for enhancing energy efficiency and predictive maintenance in mechanical systems.
