The EEBUS initiative has carried out tests with the communication interface for energy systems at the Audi plant in Brussels. Audi is involved in promoting the initiative's standard.

In doing so, German car manufacturer Audi wants to help promote the development and distribution of EEBUS, a communication interface for energy systems. The Audi plant in Brussels hosted "Plugfest E-Mobility", an event for developers of the initiative.

Members of EEBUS have tested their developments on the basis of the open communication standard at Audi. Developers and engineers performed pilot experiments to check whether the photovoltaics system, the charging infrastructure, the electric car, and the heating system could communicate without interference. Contrary to popular belief, electric vehicles such as the Audi e-tron are not only additional consumers in the power grid but could also potentially serve as flexible energy storage devices.

Communication with smart grid required

However, this does not only require intelligent communication with a home energy management system (HEMS), but also with the entire power grid. The EEBUS standard, which is being developed and promoted by the initiative, could become the basis for an intelligent power grid, a smart grid.

Audi has implemented the EEBUS standard in the Audi e-tron, making it the first electric car to use the interface. In addition to its possible use as an energy storage device, a specific application is currently as overload protection: When electric cars and other energy systems communicate with each other via a HEMS, load balancing can be regulated and overloading of the house energy network can be avoided.
