Abstract

The article delves into the complex dynamics of a rigid body immersed in an unbounded perfect fluid, focusing on the energy of acceleration of the fluid and its impact on the system's inertial properties. By employing the Gibbs–Appell formalism, the authors derive the Kirchhoff-Thomson-Tait equations, which describe the motion of the rigid body. The research highlights the importance of considering the total energy of acceleration and how it modifies the system's behavior. The study is further illustrated with a case study of a disc in unsteady rectilinear motion, providing explicit forms for the total energy of acceleration and the hydrodynamic forces acting on the disc. This work not only recovers known formulations but also extends them to include new measures, making it a valuable resource for specialists in fluid dynamics and mechanical engineering.
