Abstract

This chapter delves into the reliability and applicability of Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) for historic buildings, particularly those constructed before 1919. It highlights the significant performance gap between EPC predictions and actual energy consumption, attributing this discrepancy to numerous assumptions and inaccuracies in the Reduced Data Standard Assessment Procedure (RdSAP) model. The text emphasizes the importance of building condition and maintenance in energy efficiency, which is often overlooked in current EPC assessments. It also explores the limitations of static modeling packages and the potential benefits of dynamic modeling for more accurate energy performance evaluations. The chapter concludes with practical recommendations for improving EPC assessments, including the integration of actual energy consumption data, the use of more complex SAP-based modeling systems, and the inclusion of building condition as a factor in EPC ratings. By addressing these issues, the chapter aims to enhance the accuracy and relevance of EPCs for historic buildings, ensuring that they meet sustainability targets without compromising the integrity of these valuable structures.
