BASF and Hengst have designed the world's first reusable plastic spin-on oil filter module for passenger cars. The Blue.on module is already being used by leading car manufacturers. eingesetzt.

The reusable spin-on oil filter module Blue.on was designed jointly by Hengst and BASF. "Hengst presented to us the idea of developing a resource-saving alternative to metal housings showing the same performance," said Christian Janeba, Senior Key Account Manager in BASF's Performance Materials division. Previously, the entire filter unit had to be replaced during oil change, but the new plastic spin-on oil filter module can be used again and again.

The BASF high-performance plastic Ultramid Structure LFX is used as a metal replacement. In simulations, tests and trials, the mechanical properties of the material were convincing at high temperatures. Long glass fibre reinforcement makes the spin-on concept possible, with a low tendency to creep and reduced warpage. In addition, the new module is 23 percent lighter than a conventional metal filter unit. All of the filter unit's components can be almost fully recycled at the end of their life cycle.
